At Chess Thrill your privacy is handled seriously and openly. This policy explains what data we collect, what it is used for, where it is kept and what rights you have, under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Why: to create your account, keep you signed in and give you an identity in the game.
Why: to pair you with opponents near your level, to track how your rating changes, to let you review your own games and to keep your training in step.
While an online game is running, the realtime server holds your name, country, rating and connection state in memory. That server writes nothing to disk. When the game ends the result is sent to the database and the memory is released.
If you play bots, solve puzzles or work through lessons without signing up, your progress is kept in your own browser. None of it reaches us or is tied to an identity.
Cookies. Only the essential WordPress cookies needed to keep you signed in. We use no advertising or tracking cookies.
Local storage. We keep the following in your browser: your visual and sound preferences, the board size you chose, the last puzzle level you used, your record against the bots, which lessons you have completed (only if you have no account) and whether you have dismissed the footer message. You can clear all of it from your browser settings.

External links in the footer only receive anything if you choose to click them.
We send you emails your account requires: confirming your registration and, if you ask for it, resetting your password. These are part of the service and are not optional.
Separately, you can choose to receive occasional emails with puzzles, lessons and news about the site. That choice is yours to make when you sign up or later in your account settings, it is never ticked for you, and you can turn it off at any time from a link in every one of those emails or from your account. If you turn it off, you keep receiving the account emails above.
Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. If you ask us to delete it, everything that identifies you is removed within 30 days.
A chess game has two players, and deleting yours would destroy your opponent’s record as well. So when an account is deleted the moves are kept, with the name replaced by “Deleted user”.
Chess Thrill is intended for people aged 16 and over. If you are under 16 you need your parent or guardian’s permission to open an account. If we learn that we hold a child’s data without that permission, we delete the account.
You have the right to see what data we hold about you and ask for a copy, to correct it, to have it deleted, to receive it in a structured format so you can take it elsewhere, to restrict what we do with it, and to object to processing we carry out on the basis of legitimate interest.
To exercise any of these, email [email] with “GDPR” in the subject line. We reply within 30 days at the latest.
You may also complain to the data protection authority in your country. In Portugal that is the CNPD (www.cnpd.pt).
If we update this policy we change the date at the top. Substantial changes are flagged on the site or emailed to account holders.
